Why Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University?

The first attempt in agricultural education during the Ottoman Empire was made in 1848 with the establishment of Mekteb-i Ziraat-i Şahane in Yeşilköy. However, this school was closed in its second academic year for various reasons.

With a decree published in 1867, it was envisaged to establish an agricultural school and a sample farm in the provincial centers. But it was not until 1884 that any progress was made in this regard. With a regulation published in 1884, the establishment of the Agricultural School was initiated. In these years, the General Directorate of Agriculture was established within the Ministry of Commerce. Agop Amaysan Efendi, who graduated from France's Grinyon Agricultural College, was appointed as the head of this Directorate.

For the school facility, the 5984-decare land in Halkalı, belonging to Miss Rukiye, wife of Mısırlı Hurşid Pasha, was purchased for 2000 gold coins. A preparatory commission was established at the Ministry of Commerce for the construction of the school and construction started. Meanwhile, 8 students are sent to France to receive agricultural education. When the first part of the construction is completed, the allocation ends. Construction waits like this for two years. Later, during the period of Zihni Pasha's Ministry of Commerce, the construction was completed by establishing a commission consisting of General Director of Agriculture Nuri Bey, Fenn-i Veterinary Consultant Mehmed Ali Bey and Agricultural Inspector Agadon Efendi.
The school was closed in 1928 in accordance with the Reform Law enacted during the reign of the last Rector, Faik Bey. In 1930, it was reopened as a 3-year secondary vocational school under the name Halkalı Agricultural School. In 1980, the education period was increased to 4 years. With the approval of the Ministry of National Education, it was deemed appropriate to provide landscape-oriented education starting from the 2001-2002 academic year, and the school was named Agricultural Production Enterprise and Landscape Vocational High School.

With the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 04.07.2005 and numbered 2005/9139, the school was closed and Halkalı Agricultural Production Enterprise Agricultural Extension and In-Service Training Center Directorate was established in its place.
